RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon is set to make her Broadway debut next year in a production of the musical Chicago. She will take on the role of Matron “Mama” Morton in a limited engagement beginning in January.

Jinkx Monsoon to Appear on Broadway in Chicago

According to Broadway World, Jinx Monsoon will appear in an eight-week limited engagement of Chicago at the Ambassador Theatre from January 16 through March 12. Monsoon is reportedly the first drag queen to take on the iconic role.

“I cannot stress enough that this has been a lifelong dream of mine,” Monsoon said of the casting. “To be making my Broadway debut, as my favorite role, in one of my favorite shows- that lifelong dream is coming true and then some. The first number I performed in drag was ‘All That Jazz,’ so this feels almost too serendipitous. But I never question my blessings, I just thank Hecate for them.”

Monsoon wrote on Instagram that she is “so thrilled, and beyond grateful” to be performing in the show. Matron “Mama” Morton was famously portrayed by Queen Latifah in the 2002 movie adaptation of Chicago. Latifah was nominated for an Oscar for the performance.

Monsoon has also released three studio albums and is the co-creator of the WOW Presents Plus series Sketchy Queens. She has previously appeared in theater productions of musicals such as Rent, Spring Awakening, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Hairspray.

On Tuesday, Monsoon shared the news that she’ll be appearing in Chicago on Instagram. Her followers commented their support, with Drag Race judge Michelle Visage writing, “This makes my heart sing.”
